These caps are placed over the connecting rod bolts when assembling the piston and connecting rod to prevent damage to the crankshaft journal. The sharp connecting rod pin can easily cause a scratch or notch on the bearing surface and thus shorten the service life. A cheap and very sensible thing that should not be missing during an overhaul.
